A Poem Worth Reading

A Soldier Died Today

A Soldier Died Today

With Memorial Day approaching we thought this poem we received from an old friend was very appropriate and well worth reading. Thanks,Pam!

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we’ll hear his tales no longer,
For ol’ Joe has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won’t be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won’t note his passing,
‘Tho a Soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician’s stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier’s part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
“OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY.”

Help for Veterans and Veteran’s Families

The links below are offered in hopes of uniting needy servicemen and women, and their families, with support organizations. If you know of other sites that have been, or could be, useful to our troops and/or their loved ones, please leave a comment below or contact us directly.

The Veterans Airlift Command (VAC) provides free air transportation to wounded veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes, through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots.

Luke’s Wings provides travel expenses for wounded warriors and their families so they can be together at military hospitals or home for the holidays!

The Mesothelioma Center is committed to providing the latest, up-to-date information to their visitors in the hopes of spreading awareness about the dangers of asbestos cancer.  Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of living veterans were exposed to toxic asbestos-containing materials during military service which could develop into mesothelioma.  Our goal is to offer a one-stop resource on all asbestos and mesothelioma-related information ranging from occupational exposure to mesothelioma life expectancy.

Honor Flight Network
is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

War Zone Wear® is a proud contributor to Operation Home Front which provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind and to wounded warriors when they return home. The greatest casualty is being forgotten.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has activated a new website aimed directly at surviving spouses of military members who died on active duty and surviving spouses of veterans who died after serving their country.

There is also a page describing survivor benefits. In addition, there are links to other state and federal government sites on that page that may offer valuable information and assistance.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) is proud to represent all veterans, their widows and orphans. There is no membership or combat wound requirement in order to receive their assistance. You can locate your local MOPH Service Officer by entering your Zip Code here. (Requires FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader to open file. You can obtain it here).

Supporting America’s military in their time of need, Fisher House provides “a home away from home” that enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time — during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.

Homes for Our Troops is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to their country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries. Homes for Our Troops assist injured servicemen and women and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and coordinating the process of building a new home or adapting an existing home for handicapped accessibility.

The VFW’s Operation Uplink is a unique program that keeps military personnel and hospitalized veterans in touch with their families and loved ones by providing them with a free phone card. Operation Uplink purchases phone cards and distributes them to servicemen and women who are separated from those they care about.

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Basil L. Plumley is one of America’s quiet heroes. It’s difficult to tell from the photo above, however CSM Plumley is wearing the following — in part — decorations:

Basil Plumley has been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving hospice care in Columbus, Georgia. His wife Deurice, died on May 28, 2012.

He was portrayed by Sam Elliott in the 2002 film, We Were Soldiers. Men like CSM Plumley don’t come along very often unfortunately.

Happy Birthday — U.S. Army and Flag Day!

U.S. Army’s 237th Birthday

Just a quick shout-out to say Happy Birthday to the U.S. Army! Formed 237 years ago in 1775, we’d just like to say Thank You to all current and former Army members! Of course we appreciate all current and past members of all the Service Branches as well!

And . . . it’s Flag Day! Though some suggest that America is not exceptional, we believe that premise couldn’t be farther from the truth! So, let Old Glory wave proudly over the most incredible country on the planet . . . to date!

Thanks! :-)
